Near Zagreb, Croatia

Near the city, it is possible to visit the ancient fortress of Medvedgrad, on Mount Medvednica. The fortress is interesting, for those who don't get to see fortresses very often, but it is quite a hike from the nearest city bus stop. The view of Zagreb is probably unrivaled.

The nearby Veliki Tabor is reportedly quite impressive and accessible by bus. It is a Romantic/Gothic structure that houses a fair amount of art.
