Rome - there is so much to it. Being the home of the Roman Empire as well as the Holy Roman Empire, there are a lot of remnants and ruins from these times. And food... and shopping...
There is so much to see - the Vatican, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, many piazzas, obelisks, and of course fountains, as well as the nearby countryside. Shown here a few of the main sights.
The Castel Sant' Angelo was originally built as a family tomb for the Emperor Hadrian. It was later converted into a fortress for the Romans, and finally used by the Papal Military. I hear from a friend that it also the setting for the Opera "Tosca" (which I haven't seen).
The Pantheon was originally built in 27 B.C., then rebuilt by the Emperor Hadrian in 120 A.D. It is said to be the oldest building in continuous use in the West.
