Rynek Glowny (Main Square)

In the center of the main square is the Cloth Hall, a beautiful building of Renaissance design that was at one time used by the cloth merchants. Today it is still in use, but by souvenir peddlers. Also in the main square are the Town Hall and St. Mary's Church. St. Mary's facade has two towers of differing size and detail. The legend is that the towers were built by two brothers: one who was hasty in his workstyle, and the other who was deliberate, with attention to detail. The hasty brother is said to have killed his brother in a fit of jealousy. The weapon he used is supposedly displayed in the Cloth Hall; we couldn't find it. At every hour on the hour, a trumpet call is played from the towers in the 4 directions. The call is cut short in recollection of the invasion of Krakow by Tatars in 1241, in which - the legend goes - the Tatars shot down the trumpeter in the middle of his call.
