Split, Croatia
Split is a good-sized town on a peninsula on the Dalmatian Coast. The Old Town (Stari Grad), is bordered by a mountain and a waterfront lined with palm trees.
A main attraction of Split is the remains of the summer palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, which was built in the 3rd century. In the 7th century, the people of Split moved into the fortress to protect themselves from invading Slavs, and then later built their city within its walls. All that remains today of the palace are the cellars and some walls, and you can still see residences - with residents.
The Marjan Park next to Old Town consists of a mountain and beaches. The mountain makes for a tranquil escape from the noisy city, as you will encounter hardly anyone there. The view from the top is magnificent. The beaches are rocky, the water is blue, and, while not especially clear, refreshing.
A lot of people visit Split and then leave for the nearby islands. You can reach them by ferry (operated by Jadrolinija) or catamaran. Nearby islands include Brac, Vis, and Hvar. All have their good points. We visited Hvar - click on the Hvar button to find out more.
