Stonehenge
Stonehenge lies near the town of Salisbury in the southwest of England, about 3 hours from London by train or 1.5 hours by car. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The attraction, of course, is a ring of very large stones (up to 5 tons), arranged in a circle, standing up and made to form door-like frames. Steonehenge is a feat of engineering as well as an interesting site for its function. Some of the rocks are believed to have been brought from Wales. The site was constructed in several phases, from 2000 to 1200 B.C. The site was not constructed by the Druids (it existed before they did) but perhaps used by them. Visitors are not allowed up to the rocks, but rather can walk around the perimeter of the site with handheld audio guides.
