Wuerzburg is the capital of Lower Franconia. It is on the Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse) that connects several beautiful Bavarian towns. Wuerzburg site on the Main River. Of interest are:
° the Residenz, or Princebishop's Palace, a Unesco-World Heritage Site with beautiful court gardens
° a charming center with shops, many statues and Rathaus (Town Hall)
° the Marienberg Fortress, dating from 1200, with excellent views of the city
° beautiful churches including:
° Dom St. Killian - this cathedral dates from 11th-12th centuries and was completely destroyed in 1945. It was reconsecrated in 1967.
° Stift Heug - by the Italian Petrini, this is the first large baroque church in Franconia
° St. Johannis - near the Residenz, built in 1895 and partially destroyed in WWII, it was rebuilt by 1957
° Kaepelle - a pilgrimage church that was built around 1748
