Zagreb, Croatia

The capital city of Croatia, with 870,000 inhabitants, is a most interesting city. Zagreb is really not a tourist destination, and the lack of organized tours and small number of hotels supports this. Still, it is a nice place to be.
The tourist information center offers brochures with suggested walking tours (2), which point out the main points of interest of the city.
The day we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by a parade in the center of town. Men and women turned out in traditional Croatian garb, paraded to the main square, and then played music and danced traditional dances.
I would highly recommend the walking tours suggested by the tourist center to better acquaint yourself with the city. A stop at the market is a must - the offerings are delectable, from fresh fruits to Dalmatian prosciutto to balls of fresh cheeses and freshly baked bread.
Near the city, it is possible to visit the ancient fortress of Medvedgrad, on Mount Medvednica. The fortress is interesting, for those who don't get to see fortresses very often, but it is quite a hike from the nearest city bus stop. The view of Zagreb is probably unrivaled.
